Good morning,
I hope you’re doing well. San Francisco and the bay area are one of my favorite places to grab lunch; the delicious food is my absolute favorite!
However, during my visit and attention what’re they use on the drinking straw. I couldn’t help but notice that straws are automatically placed in all of the drinks. Current, our sustainability illusion situation such like:
Straws and single-use plastic, in general, have been getting a lot of media attention. In 2018 California was leading the way have banned away plastic straws in 2019.
Washington DC followed their lead and banned plastic straws in January 2019. Other cities that have instigated a plastic straws ban include Miami Beach in Florida and Malibu in California.
Despite the concerted efforts by corporations, the plastic straws ban has only made a minor difference in plastic waste production. National Geographic reveals that where 8 million tons of plastics flow into the ocean every year, plastic straws merely comprise 0.025% of the total.
Similarly, in Portland, Oregon, plastic straws and cutlery are only available upon request as of July 1, 2019. Other states that have partial bans on plastic straws include Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, Florida, Virginia, South Carolina, and New York, per Orbitz's 2019 interactive map.
In May 2018, European Union proposed a ban on single-use plastics including straws, cotton buds, cutlery, balloon sticks, and drink stirrers. The UK government committed at most £4 million to “Plastics innovation: towards zero waste” in the summer of 2017 in an attempt to mitigate the circulation of unnecessary plastic. It is estimated that as of 2018, about 23 million straws are used and discarded daily in the UK.
Why did the state pass the law? The bill's author, Assembly Ian Calderon, D-Whittier, said the bill is an effort to create “awareness around the issue of one-time-use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans.”
Starbucks to ban plastics straws in all stores by 2020.Published CCN, 9 July 2018. McDonald’s to test plastic straw alternatives in the U.S. later this year.Zlati.Meyer. USA TODAY June 15.2018.
Where is plastic straw banned? Plastic straws can take up to 200 years
to decompose. Two big straw users and buyers still have plastic straws in their stores. After three years.
Straws may seem small, but it adds up. In the US alone, we use 500 million plastic straws every day! We use 5 million plastic straws in California every day!
Currently, 8 million tons of plastic winds up in the ocean each year. Most of that is single-use plastic which is responsible for killing over 100,000 marine animals annually.
I would like to ask that Berkeley Sustainability, adopt a straw on request only policy. This means that straws aren’t automatically put into drinks or advertised. Instead, they are only handed out when a customer specifically asks for one.
Maybe sustainable restraints already use the name compostable or biodegradable products. Maybe or maybe not they don’t know that is these products cannot natural compostable. All PLA and PBT material need to be landfilled and put into the condition for compostable. Otherwise, it will create new pollution and be harmful to our environment. Do you have a good landfill condition solution for your compostable products? Do you know these compostable products could be landfills somewhere? If you don’t know about this, the compostable and plastic are similar. Even the products put ecolabel, Maybe or maybe you not should be aware that there are many websites and organization that look official but will charge for their expensive services.
sustain you will significantly decrease the number of straws you go through having a positive effect on the environment and the bottom line. Sustain you is a start-up company that manufactures biodegradable straws from corn, rice, wheat, and other grain plant fiber. The straws are edible and compostable and will compete advantageously, not just with plastic but also with paper straws, which generally cannot be composted. While there are imported biodegradable straws, Sustain You has a cost advantage due to its purchase of local materials and the reduction in shipping costs. The company plans to hire a diverse group of individuals, including minorities, women, and low-income individuals.
I hope you’ll take my request under consideration. thank you!
Sincerely,
